About the Role: What Will You Be Doing?
This isn’t your typical product management role. As a Senior Product Manager at MHCLG, you will be empowered to lead a multi-disciplinary agile team, own your own backlog, and make decisions that shape digital services used by citizens and internal government users.
You could find yourself working on a variety of high-profile projects, including:
-
The Digital Planning Programme: A mission to completely modernise the UK’s planning system.
-
Private Rented Sector Reform: Leading a systematic programme of change to improve housing for millions.
-
The Funding Service: Helping teams deliver vital grant funding quickly, consistently, and effectively.
-
Common Tools & Platforms: Building standardised, reusable tools that make work better for everyone in the department.
In any of these teams, your core mission will be to develop a compelling product vision based on a deep understanding of user needs, and to lead your team to deliver solutions that meet those needs.
Is This You? What We’re Looking For
We are seeking professionals with a proven track record in product management. You don’t need to be a Civil Service expert, but you do need to have:
-
A history of success as a product management professional.
-
Demonstrable experience using iterative and agile approaches to deliver user-focused solutions.
-
Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to explain your product vision to your team and senior leaders.
-
Experience in motivating a team to collectively own an ambitious vision and deliver great results.
How to Apply Senior Product Manager Government Jobs
Applying for a Civil Service role can feel different, but our process is designed to be as fair and unbiased as possible. Here’s what to expect:
-
Anonymous Application: You will apply via the Civil Service Jobs website. To reduce bias, your personal details (name, age, gender, etc.) are hidden from the hiring manager. Your answers to the behaviour-based questions are “chunked” and randomised, so assessors review responses to one question at a time, not your whole application in one go.
-
The Sift: Your CV and your answer to a lead technical question will be reviewed first. The lead question is: “Can you describe a time when you were a Product Manager in an agile team. How did you understand the needs of your users and what impact did this have on the work you prioritised?”
-
The Interview: If you are successful at the sift, you’ll be invited to a remote interview via video call. This will be a “blended” interview, exploring your past experience, your technical skills, and two key Civil Service Behaviours: “Making Effective Decisions” and “Working Together.”
Benefits Beyond the Salary
We believe in rewarding our people well. Alongside a competitive salary of £54,531–£64,641, you’ll receive:
-
A Civil Service Pension with a very generous employer contribution of 28.97% (that’s over £15,700 a year).
-
Learning and development opportunities tailored to your role and career goals.
-
A culture that encourages inclusion, diversity, and flexible working options to support your work-life balance.
If you are ready to apply your product management skills to some of the most important challenges facing the country, we would love to hear from you.
