What Makes This Opportunity Special?

Working at DWP Digital means your work has a real-world impact. Whether you’re helping to ensure the Universal Credit system runs smoothly or supporting the services that deliver State Pensions, you are at the heart of a team that helps people access the financial support and advice they need.

This is a unique “earn as you learn” opportunity. You will spend 20% of your working hours studying for a Level 3 Digital Support Technician Apprenticeship, all while getting hands-on experience in a dynamic and supportive environment. You won’t be alone on this journey; you’ll have a dedicated line manager, a skills coach, and a community of fellow apprentices to cheer you on.

What You’ll Actually Be Doing

As an Apprentice IT Service Manager, no two days are the same. Depending on your location, you could be:

  • Part of the Universal Credit Product Support team (Newcastle): You’ll be on the front line, managing incidents, helping users with claim issues, and tackling service challenges within a multi-functional team.

  • In the IT Service Operations, Service Design and Transition team (Blackpool or Manchester): Here, you’ll learn what it takes to introduce new IT services. You’ll ensure they are reliable, supportable, and provide real value to the department, all while learning about best-practice standards and stakeholder engagement.

Is This a Good Fit for You?

We are looking for potential, not perfection. You don’t need a degree or years of experience. Here are the key things we’re looking for:

  • You must have the right to live and work in the UK for the full 18-month duration of the apprenticeship.

  • You need to have GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above (or an equivalent Level 2 functional skills test).

  • Crucially, you must not already have a qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject, or significant previous work experience in this specific field. This is a genuine apprenticeship designed to build skills from the ground up.

How to Apply DWP IT Apprenticeship

The application process is thorough, but straightforward. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Initial Application: You’ll start by filling out your personal details.

  2. Online Test: You will then be invited to complete the Civil Service Numerical Test. It’s best to do this within 24-48 hours.

  3. Full Application: Once you pass the test, you’ll complete your employment history and write four 250-word behavioural statements on: Making Effective Decisions, Communicating and Influencing, Managing a Quality Service, and Working Together.

  4. Eligibility Check: If you are successful at the sift, our apprenticeship provider (Estio) will contact you for an eligibility and skills check.

  5. The Interview: The final stage is a video interview on Microsoft Teams where you’ll discuss your behaviours and motivations.

A quick tip: Don’t wait until the last minute! Sifting happens at regular intervals, so applying early is a great idea.

The Benefits of Working at DWP

Beyond the rewarding work, you’ll get a fantastic benefits package, including:

  • Generous annual leave (starting at 23 days and rising to 30, plus public holidays).

  • Flexible working patterns to help your work-life balance.

  • Support for your financial wellbeing, including interest-free season ticket loans.

  • An inclusive environment with plenty of professional networks to join.

If you are ready to kick-start your IT career in a role that matters, this is your chance. We are excited to see what you can bring to our team.
